Research Paper

  • Use your log book to make your notes prior to typing up.
  • Research paper needs to be 800 words, double spaced 12 font with 1-inch margins.
  • Summarize current research being done on your topic or any other information that had to be looked up such as safety precautions, information about one or more components of your experiment, and any other information that you had to look-up.
  • It needs to be written in expository style writing (third person). No first person or personal pronouns, use “the scientist” or “the researcher”
  • It’s useful to end each section with a question that you are trying to answer.
  • It needs an introduction that attracts the attention of the reader and includes why your problem/question is important. Include general information about your topic. Include statistics to show the significance of your problem.
  • The next part of the paper is to clearly detail what is already known about your topic including a description of the relationship between your independent and dependent variables. Be sure to fully describe each independent variable and how it relates to your topic.  (If you are varying the medium beans that are being planted then describe the properties of each medium, explain why the bean plants grow faster in soil than clay or sand and explain why you are measuring height instead of counting leaves or measuring growth rate) Try to find this information from encyclopedias, books, journals, websites, and by interviewing experts in the field of science you are investigating.
  • Address any safety precautions that need to be taken for this investigation.
  • The last thing you type is a paragraph that includes a summary of the importance of your investigation, the variables and the relationship between the variables.
  • This all must be easily understood and stick to the main topic.
  • It must be in YOUR OWN WORDS! Use plagiarisma.net to or similar site to ensure you work is at least 85% “unique”.
  • Make sure that it is written in sequential order.
  • DO NOT talk about the actual experiment, just discuss the variables and control that you researched.
  • DO NOT start typing halfway down the page or add extra space between paragraphs.
  • Use proper grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Bibliography

The bibliography should list all the printed materials the student used to carry out the project. Items should be listed in alphabetical order by author’s last name or first word of the title in APA or MLA format.

Use at least 5 credible sources. Not all sources should be from the internet. Use books, encyclopedias, magazines, or interview an expert.
